Ash Wednesday

Lent begins this week on Ash Wednesday, March 9. The regulations for fast and abstinence on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent are found elsewhere in the bulletin. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be held after the 12:10 Mass on the Fridays of Lent, concluding at 5:10 with the Stations of the Cross, Benediction and a Soup Supper. The Stations will also be prayed before the 12:10 Mass each weekday, beginning Thursday, March 10, at 11:40. Bishop Callahan will be here to celebrate the 12:10 Mass on Ash Wednesday and the 10:30 Mass next Sunday, March 13.

The Cathedral Catholic Education Committee is again providing the Little Black Book with daily meditations for the season of Lent. They are available in the Narthex and Gathering Area. This committee also hosts the soup suppers after the 5:10 Stations and Benediction, beginning this Friday, March 11. The soups this week will be made by Pete Sayner, Bill Sterba and Margaret Lichter; and Kris and Terry Wirkus will speak about the plans for our parish’s sesquicentennial.

The last in our Cathedral Forum series will be held this coming Saturday morning, March 12, at 9:00, in the Undercroft. Entitled, “Making Sense of Suffering,” this forum is sponsored by our Ministry of Care, and features parishioners Lori Kaufmann and Chris Ruff as presenters. Confirmation students are reminded of their obligation to attend at least two of these presentations, and this is the last chance for any who have not yet fulfilled that requirement.

We will have a unique organ and trumpet concert next Saturday evening at 7:30, featuring musicians from Luxemburg. The Men’s Club is hosting its last pancake/omelet breakfast next Sunday morning. More details about both events are in the bulletin. Finally, remember that daylight saving time begins next Sunday morning at 2:00. Be sure to turn your clocks ahead one hour before retiring next Saturday night, or you will be late for everything on Sunday.

Pray the Rosary again this week for peace throughout the Middle East, and for the safety of military personnel from our area serving abroad. Pray for the earthquake victims in New Zealand, and for the victims of flooding and tornadoes in our own country. Pray for a just resolution to the budget controversy in our state. Pray for all who are struggling with illness and for the people who care for them.
